With regards to bone cancer, a recent study showed increased percentages of bone sarcoma in spayed
and neutered Rottweilers versus intact Rottweilers.
He encouraged pet owners to have their pets spayed or neutered and to have them vaccinated against rabies, distemper and other diseases.
The Worcester Animal Rescue League will spay a female cat for $60 or neuter a male cat for $45, with rabies and distemper shots available for $10 each, and heartworm and other tests available for $25.
During July only, people with a Springfield address can get their cat spayed or neutered for $10.
Up until now, there have been few alternatives for Springfield residents seeking a low-cost way to spay and neuter cats, particularly ones that are strays.
Cary Lieberman, executive director of Greenhill Humane Society, the Eugene-based agency that's the county's largest animal-care group, said CARE will add to ongoing efforts to make low- to no-cost spay and neuter services available and raise awareness about the necessity of the service.
"Everyone can get behind the spay and neuter campaign, whether they are an animal lover or hater," she said.
"If enough animal lovers come together and give a small amount, they can keep a sustained spay and neuter program going," she said.
