skier's thumb

a colloquial expression used in sports medicine to describe instability of the metacarpophalangeal joint caused by forced abduction whilst the thumb is extended (e.g. holding the ski stick in a fall); this stretches or ruptures the ulnar collateral ligament which normally limits movement of the thumb away from the hand. Also known as gamekeeper's thumb since similar damage was caused by breaking the neck of birds or rabbits held between finger and thumb.
