silicone rubber

A polymeric elastomeric, transparent material that is used in the manufacture of silicone rubber contact lenses. It has very high oxygen permeability but it is also very hydrophobic (wetting angle greater than 90º). The surfaces must be specially treated to render them wettable. A silicone component is used in silicone hydrogel and gas permeable contact lenses. Syn. poly(dimethyl siloxane). See contact angle; index of refraction; silicone hydrogel lens; modulus of elasticity.

Key players leading the global silicone rubber market include KCC CORPORATION (South Korea), CHT Group (Germany), Elkem Silicones (Norway), Momentive (US), MESGO S.p.A.
For 2019, the chemical group is planning further capacity enhance-ments for liquid silicone rubber, high- and room-temperature-vulcanising silicones and thermally conductive silicone compounds at its production sites in Burghausen (Germany), Adrian (Michigan, USA) and Zhangjiagang (China).
The production of room-temperature-vulcanizing silicone elastomers and liquid silicone rubbers has also started in Amtala, India, where WACKER manufactures silicones in a joint venture with Metroark.
It is well known that the mechanical property of silicone rubber matrix is too weak to directly use.
A specific example of a product making a difference in the market today is the recent development of a silicone rubber sling, Wheeler said.
Until MPM introduced UV-curing silicone rubbers, heat had always been a limiting factor for designers and manufacturers when selecting materials for substrates and inserts to combine with silicone.
Due to its properties, recoverable silicone rubber obtained through specific technologies is the most stable polymer currently available, offering good reliability combined with long life at convenient production costs.
The gum silicone rubber is supplied to septa manufactures in either large blocks or fiber drums.
plants in Rock Hill, S.C., and Ventura, Calif., consists primarily of silicone rubber for moldmaking as well as silicone fluids and silanes, including a mold release for polyurethanes.
High strength and flexibility are features of a line of thin-walled diaphragms that are injection molded of liquid silicone rubber. These sealing devices, when molded of liquid silicone rubber, improve design function and cost efficiency over similar parts using traditional millable gum processes.
Typical combinations of co-molded assemblies include: rubber to rubber, such as high voltage insulators/resistors that require conductive and non-conductive silicone rubber compounds be molded together in one assembly; rubber to plastic, such as electrical connectors consisting of a plastic hard shell with a molded in place silicone seal, and self cleaning shower heads consisting of a plastic head with molded in place silicone jets; and rubber to rubber to plastic - such as keypad assemblies consisting of a plastic frame with molded in place silicone rubber keys and conductive silicone rubber contacts.
