New Jersey prohibits a practitioner from referring a patient or directing an employee to refer a patient to a health-care service in which the practitioner, or his immediate family member, has a "significant beneficial interest."
A "significant beneficial interest" means any financial interest in a health-care service, and a "health-care service" is defined as a business entity that provides for testing for, or diagnosis or treatment of, human disease or dysfunction or dispensing of drugs or medical devices.
