A descriptive term for the light microscopic appearance of skeletal muscle exposed to extreme heat or cold, which is characterised by necrosis and irregular transverse bands of dense material separated by lighter areas, and likened to the frayed ends of cloth that has been torn apart. This appearance may also be seen in myotonic dystrophy or as a fixation artefact.
