sex link·age

inheritance of a trait or a sex chromosome or gonosome. A man receives all his sex-linked genes from his mother and transmits them all to his daughters but not to his sons; a recessive sex-linked character is much more likely to be expressed in the male.

sex linkage

n.
The condition in which a gene responsible for a specific trait is located on a sex chromosome, resulting in sexually dependent inheritance of the trait.

, sex-linked (seks lingk'ăj, seks-lingkt)
Inheritance of a trait or a sex chromosome or gonosome. A man receives all his x-linked genes from his mother and transmits them all to his daughters but not to his sons; a recessive sex-linked character is much more likely to be expressed in the male.

sex linkage

the location of genes on one or other of the SEX CHROMOSOMES producing an inheritance pattern which is different from that shown by AUTOSOMES. See Fig. 283 .

Most sex-linked genes are located on the X-chromosome (X-linkage), although some conditions are controlled by genes on the Y-chromosome (Y-linkage) that are only transmitted through the males, for example, genes responsible for SEX DETERMINATION in mammals.
