scyphistoma

(sī-fĭs′tə-mə)
n. pl. scyphisto·mae (-mē) or scyphisto·mas
A larva of a scyphozoan, consisting of a very small sessile polyp that successively splits off free-swimming medusas.

a larval form of a COELENTERATE, arising from a planula larva, which may bud, but in autumn and winter produces EPHYRA larva by STROBILATION. see SCYPHOZOAN.
