A group of cancer targets introduced in the UK in 2009, which are based on referrals from NHS screening services (NHS Bowel Cancer, Breast, and Cervical Screening Programmes), and subject to a 62-day pathway, beginning from the day that the referral is received. The standards set out in the post-2009 62-day targets (standard pathways) also apply to screening referrals.

Our findings correlate with reports from a pilot study performed at immunisation clinics in South Africa, where one of the main barriers of the hearing screening programme was found to be poor follow-up, with only 40% of initial screening referrals returning for follow-up screening, and the figure decreasing even further to 11% for return for diagnostic assessment.
These findings support the notion that interventions to improve follow-up on school vision screening referrals represent an important component of screening programs.
