a ladderlike structure, especially any of various passages of the cochlea.
scala me´dia cochlear duct.
scala tym´pani the part of the cochlea below the spiral lamina.
scala vesti´buli the part of the cochlea above the spiral lamina.

[TA]
a spirally arranged membranous tube suspended within the cochlea, lying between and separating the scala vestibuli and scala tympani; it begins by a blind extremity, the vestibular cecum, in the cochlear recess of the vestibule, terminating in another blind extremity, the cecum cupulare or lagena, at the cupola of the cochlea; it contains endolymph and communicates with the sacculus by the ductus reuniens; the spiral organ (of Corti), the neuroepithelial receptor organ for hearing, occupies the floor of the duct, and the stria vascularis covers the outer wall.

scala media

(skā′lə mē′dē-ə)
n. pl. scalae mediae (skā′lē mē′dē-ē)
The middle division of three divisions of the spiral cavity winding around the modiolus of the cochlea in the inner ear. It is situated between the scala vestibuli and scala tympani, filled with endolymph, and houses the organ of Corti. Also called cochlear duct.

(kok'lē-ăr dŭkt) [TA]
A spirally arranged membranous tube suspended within the cochlea, occupying the lower portion of the scala vestibuli; it begins by a blind extremity, the vestibular cecum, in the cochlear recess of the vestibule, and ends in another blind extremity, the cecum cupulare or lagena, at the cupola of the cochlea; it contains endolymph and communicates with the sacculus by the ductus reuniens; the spiral organ (organ of Corti), the neuroepithelial receptor organ for hearing, occupies the floor of the duct.
