Etymology: L, retinere, to hold; AS, ofer + flowan
a complication of bladder outlet obstruction in which the bladder is full but is not emptied completely. Urine dribbles out with a sense of urgency, or uncontrollable intermittent leakage occurs. Also called paradoxic incontinence.

retention with overflow

A spasm of the urinary sphincter, causing failure to empty the bladder at one voiding, with only overflow dribbling away. It results from the same causes as urinary retention.
