rearrangement ion

rearrangement ion

In mass spectrometry, a fragment ion formed in a dissociation in which one or more atoms are transferred from one part of the molecule to another during fragmentation. Because the structural requirements for forming rearrangement fragment ions (RFIs) are constrained, identification and rationalisation of RFIs are especially important in spectral interpretation.
