ASPEN

Atorvastatin/Lipitor™ Study for the Prevention of coronary heart disease Endpoints in Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. A trial comparing atorvastatin to placebo in reducing morbidity and mortality in type 2 diabetics ± previous myocardial infarction (MI).
Primary endpoints Cardiovascular disease-related death, nonfatal MI, nonfatal stroke, recanalization, CABG surgery, resuscitated cardiac arrest, and worsening or unstable angina.
Conclusion Despite a mean 29% reduction in the levels of LDL cholesterol in the atorvastatin group, no significant reduction in the rate of the primary end point; these results are discordant with the findings of other studies assessing statins in diabetics, which may have been related to changes in treatment guidelines during the study.
