Scientists working for the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust have used DNA sequencing to prove that the 12-inch tall pygmy hog of Assam in India, a species so rare it was once believed extinct, belongs to a unique evolutionary line.
But the team found that Victorian taxonomist Hodgson was correct in his original suspicion that the pygmy hog is indeed a unique genus, and a new branch of the evolutionary tree and the scientific name he gave it, Porcula salvania, should be reinstated.
Durrell is working in India on the conservation of the pygmy hog, in conjunction with the Assamese Forest Department and other agencies.
Additional Asian species of wild pigs include the Javan Warty Pig from Indonesia, the Bearded Pig from Sulawesi in the Celebes and the two rarer and protected species, the Pygmy Hog from the Himalayan foothills of Assam and the Barbirusa from the Sulawesi, Togian, Sulu and Buru Islands in Southeast Asia.
