psychotropic analgesic nitrous oxide

The use of inhaled nitrous oxide, without producing general anaesthesia, as a measure to assist in the management of drug and alcohol withdrawal. Nitrous oxide acts on opioid systems in the nucleus accumbens to regulate dopamine accumulation there. This is said to be directly related to the withdrawal state. Also known as PAN.
