A consultant doctor appointed by a deanery, who is responsible for the allocation of trainees to training posts, supervision of programmes of training and for regular formal assessment of the trainees in the specialty in the deanery. In large specialties, there may be more than one programme director who may also undertake other roles such as Chair of the Specialist Training Committee or Regional Specialty Advisers.
