1. A formal assessment of the quality of work. Proficiency tests for health care personnel are commonly performed in the clinical laboratory to ensure that standard procedures are followed and that laboratory results are reliable.
2. The validation of a laboratory's accuracy by examination of unknown specimens submitted to the laboratory by an independent agency. In the U.S., all laboratories that examine human specimens must undergo external validation of their accuracy several times a year.
