pregnane

 [preg´nān]
a crystalline saturated steroid hydrocarbon; β-pregnane is the form from which several hormones, including progesterone, are derived; α-pregnane is the form excreted in the urine.

preg·nane

(preg'nān),
Parent hydrocarbon of two series of steroids stemming from 5α-pregnane (originally allopregnane) and 5β-pregnane (17β-ethyletiocholane). 5β-Pregnane is the parent of the progesterones, pregnane alcohols, ketones, and several adrenocortical hormones and is found largely in urine as a metabolic product of 5β-pregnane compounds.

pregnane

/preg·nane/ (preg´nān) a crystalline saturated steroid hydrocarbon, C21H36; β-pregnane is the form from which several hormones, including progesterone, are derived; α-pregnane is the form excreted in the urine.

preg·nane

(preg'nān)
Parent hydrocarbon of the progesterones, pregnane alcohols, ketones, and several adrenocortical hormones.

pregnane

one of the two major types of steroid hormone involved in female reproductive processes; includes progesterone.

There are two groups of families of neurosteroids: the inhibitory neurotransmitter receptor families of pregnane neurosteroids that include allopregnanolone and aIlotetrahydrodeoxycorticosterone, and the excitatory neurotransmitter receptor families of androstane neurosteroids, such as androstanediol and etiocholanone.
Some PBDEs have been shown to cause pregnane X receptor (PXR)--and constitutive androstane receptor (CAR)-mediated induction of liver enzymes responsible for thyroid hormone clearance, which might compromise brain development by causing thyroid hormone insufficiency (EFSA 2011; Costa and Giordano 2011).
