The postganglionic fibers
join branches of the mandibular nerve (primarily the auriculotemporal and buccal nerves) to supply the parotid gland and nearby mucous glands with secretomotor fibers and also supply the vasculature with vasodilator fibers.
Ischemia occurs in migraine, particularly in prolonged attacks and it is possible that, a prolonged vasospasm occurred in our patient and caused infarction of the postganglionic fibers
leading to permanent dysfunction of the left pupil.
In such cases, irritation of cranial nerves V and VII and the sympathetic postganglionic fibers
of the superior cervical ganglion might have caused the symptoms associated with cluster headache.
"In achalasia, you have a loss of the inhibitory postganglionic fibers
, and as a result, there is a relatively increased amount of acetylcholine.
* the chorda tympani nerve, which supplies taste fibers to the anterior two-thirds of the tongue, preganglionic parasympathetic fibers to the submandibular gland, and postganglionic fibers
to the submandibular and sublingual glands
Sympathetic nerve fibers from the superior cervical ganglion, along with the postganglionic fibers
of the parasympathetic nervous system, synapse with intercalated cells, myoepithelial cells, and acinar cells.
