The study of inherited variations in genetic factors that influence a patient's metabolic response to a given drug, especially adverse side effects. Also called pharmacogenetics.

pharmacogenomics

The recognition of the fact and significance of human genetic variability in relation to drug action and its application to medical treatment. Genetic variability affects drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion. As a result, many drugs which work very well in some people work poorly in others. At present, the best doctors can do is to prescribe a drug and then wait and see how well the patient responds. Fuller knowledge of pharmacogenomics will, in the future, allow more reliable treatment and avoid expensive waste.

analysis of the effects of GENOMICS on drug responses. This involves all the pharmacologically active genes, how they manifest their variations, how they interact to produce PHENOTYPES, and how these phenotypes affect drug responses. DNA MICROARRAYS/CHIPS should be useful in determining how genetic variation influences individual responses to a given drug or class of drugs. A major aim is to personalize drugs, by adapting them specifically to an individual's own genetic make-up, so that they will be fully efficacious with no side effects.
