peritoneal abscess

Etymology: Gk, peri + teinein + L, abscedere, to go away
an abscess in the peritoneal cavity, the result of peritonitis and usually complicated by adhesions.

peritoneal abscess

An abscess within the peritoneal cavity usually following peritonitis. It is usually caused by enteric bacteria, e.g., Escherichia coli, enterococci, or Klebsiella.
