Further experiments demonstrated that the five contiguous carbons making up C-2',2,3,4,4' of pyridoxamine (highlighted in black) are derived not from deoxyxylulose, but from an intact pentose or pentulose. Further studies are currently underway in the Spenser group to determine exactly how the yeasts biosynthesize vitamin B6 (see Figure 5).
