parallel axis theorem

mathematical method of relating the moment of inertia of a body or object around one axis to the moment of inertia of the same body or object around a parallel axis. Calculated as I2 = I1 + md2 where I1 and I2 are the moments of inertia, m is the mass of the object and d is the distance between the two parallel axes.
