paraglottic space

paraglottic space

the space on each side of the glottis bounded laterally by the perichondrium of the thyroid cartilage and the cricothyroid membrane and posteriorly by the mucous membrane of the pyriform sinus; anterosuperiorly it extends into the preepiglottic space. It is an important route of transglottic and extralaryngeal spread of carcinoma of the larynx.

Embryologically, the supraglottis has a separate origin from the glottis, explaining why supraglottic tumors typically do not traverse the ventricle to reach the glottis unless the paraglottic space is involved.
After resection of the triangle of the thyroid lamina, dissection of the laryngocele is continued under direct vision in the paraglottic space down to the ventricle, staying as close as possible to the laryngocele (figure 3).
An insufficient view of the surgical site, anterior commissure involvement in the craniocaudal direction (T2), invasion of the posterior paraglottic space with arytenoid fixation, massive infiltration of the pre-epiglottic space, and the presence of minor thyroid cartilage erosion (T3) are the most controversial situations with regard to the use of TLM in glottic and supraglottic cancers (24).
Augmentation of the interarytenoid space is a simple and innovative alternative to the traditional paraglottic space injection, and it carries a low risk to the patient.
mucosa of base of tongue, vallecula, medial wall of pyriform sinus) without fixation of the larynx T3 Tumor limited to larynx with vocal cord fixation and/or invades any of the following: postcricoid area, pre-epiglottic space, paraglottic space, and/ or inner cortex of thyroid cartilage T4a Moderately advanced local disease Tumor invades through the thyroid cartilage and/ or invades tissues beyond the larynx (e.
The edema was located at the aryepiglottic fold; it encompassed the arytenoid cartilage and false vocal fold, and it extended into the paraglottic space.
Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) of the neck demonstrated a homogeneous soft-tissue lesion that involved the left paraglottic space and glottis and extended into the subglottis (figure 1).
The mass extended to the right false vocal fold, paraglottic space, and subglottis.
The mass had obliterated the paraglottic space and distorted the thyroid cartilage.
This is precisely the expected location of the lesion as the inflammatory mass expanded and followed the path of least resistance inferiorly through the loose tissue of the paraglottic space.
The hemorrhage in this case resulted from manipulation within the paraglottic space, perhaps from trauma to the inner perichondrium of the thyroid cartilage.
Axial computed tomography (CT) showed a heterogeneously enhancing soft-tissue mass involving both the false and truevocal folds and extending to the supraglottis, arytenoids, and paraglottic space (figure 1).
