adjective Referring to a medical drug or device that can be purchased by a consumer without a doctor’s prescription.

over-the-counter (OTC),

adj describes medications that can be legally sold without a doctor's prescription. In the United States, such medications are strictly regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These medications include sunscreens, antimicrobials or antifungals, analgesics such as aspirin and ibuprofen, and other miscellaneous topical products that have a therapeutic effect.
