In this descriptive study, among the nail changes loss of lustre was the commonest followed by vertical ridging in 97 cases (48.5%), Onychorrhexis in 64 cases (32%), Onychomycosis in 22 cases (11%), Thickening in 33 cases (16.5%), Thinning in 14 cases (7%), Subungual Hyperkeratosis in 12 cases (6%), Platyonychia in 6 cases (3%), Koilonychia in 10 cases (5%), Beau's lines in 4 cases (2%) and Pitting in 4 cases (2%).
Significantly lower levels of stratum corneum lipid ceramide, fatty acid, and cholesterol levels were also noted among the exposed workers, while symptoms, such as fissures and onychorrhexis, were more common among the exposed workers than in the control group.
The most common, aging-related nail ridges are vertical and usually accompany nail brittleness, a condition called onychorrhexis. Such vertical lines are rarely a cause for concern.
