Longitudinal evaluation of GCF MMP-3 and TIMP-1 levels as prognostic factors for progression of peri odontitis. J Clin Periodontol 2001; 28: 353-359.
The literature suggests that low level of vitamin D is associated with periodontal disease and that supplement of Vitamin D and calcium leads to better periodontal health 42, 43, 44 though these supple- mentations are not the recognized way to treat peri- odontitis but can play positive role along with other dental treatment modalities (Bio-film control, Debri- dement, GTR) to be followed before it leads to severe periodontal defect resulting in mobility or tooth loss.
But most gingivitis remains stable for years without pro- gressing to periodontitis.3 Acute exacerbation of gingi- vitis can lead to destructive periodontitis.4 The findings of Prayitno et al., (1993) revealed that gingivitis is a poor predictor of periodontitis in subjects younger than 30 years.5 According to the results of Trombelli et al., (2006), the susceptibility to gingival inflammation in response to the experimentally induced plaque accumulation may be related to susceptibility to peri- odontitis.6
