Even today, the Catholic Church remains notoriously opposed to "artificial" birth control, abortion, non-coital sex, and sex outside of marriage.
The means of fertility control, too, which in preindustrial society had been largely a matter of deferred marriage, were not the new contraceptive knowledge or devices but what Szreter calls "attempted abstinence," including (somewhat tendentiously) all means of avoiding conception from abstinence from intercourse, or limiting the frequency of coitus, through non-coital sex or premature withdrawal.
