neutral thermal environment

an environment created by any method or apparatus to maintain the normal body temperature to minimize oxygen consumption and caloric expenditure, such as in an incubator or Isolette for a premature, sick, or low-birth weight infant. See also incubator, Isolette.

neutral thermal environment

In the care of newborn infants, maintenance of ambient temperatures in an incubator within 0.5° C of the newborn's body temperature, to avoid heat or cold stress, and to optimize energy use and oxygen consumption.
