The discipline concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system that can be relieved or cured by surgical intervention. Neurosurgery is concerned mainly with head injury involving internal bleeding; tumours of the brain or spinal cord; disorders of the spinal skeleton affecting the spinal cord; abnormalities of the arteries of the nervous system, such as aneurysms around the base of the brain; congenital disorders such as hydrocephalus or spina bifida; and abscesses of the nervous system following infection.
