nestin

An intermediate filament (IF) protein encoded by NES on chromosome 1q23.1, which is required for brain and eye development. Nestin promotes disassembly of phosphorylated vimentin filaments during mitosis and may play a role in trafficking and distribution of IF proteins and other cellular factors to daughter cells during progenitor cell division. Nestin is required for survival, renewal and mitogen-stimulated proliferation of neural progenitor cells.

Normal expression
Stem cells of CNSt, interstitial cells of Cajal.

Abnormal expression
GISTs, other spindle cell tumours.

nestin

(nes′tin)
An intermediate protein filament found in stem cells. It is used in clinical pathology to identify malignant tumors arising from undifferentiated cells.

A unique feature of C6 culture is that, exactly like a GBM tumor, it contains a subculture of cancer stem cells that express CD133 and nestin, which are widely used markers for brain CSCs [18]; therefore we choose this cell line for our investigations.
