nestin

nestin

An intermediate filament (IF) protein encoded by NES on chromosome 1q23.1, which is required for brain and eye development. Nestin promotes disassembly of phosphorylated vimentin filaments during mitosis and may play a role in trafficking and distribution of IF proteins and other cellular factors to daughter cells during progenitor cell division. Nestin is required for survival, renewal and mitogen-stimulated proliferation of neural progenitor cells.

Normal expression
Stem cells of CNSt, interstitial cells of Cajal.

Abnormal expression
GISTs, other spindle cell tumours.

nestin

(nes′tin)
An intermediate protein filament found in stem cells. It is used in clinical pathology to identify malignant tumors arising from undifferentiated cells.

Several studies have demonstrated that HBO could increase Nestin expression in SVZ and hippocampus, which is involved in the repair of injured nerves.[19],[20],[21] We found that combination therapy enhanced Nestin expression in SVZ when compared to antivenom alone, especially in the early period.
More than 97% of the cultured aNSCs were positive for NSC markers Nestin and Sox2 (Supplemental Figures 1(a)-(d)), suggesting the homogeneity of aNSCs.
In our previous study, we detected reexpression of nestin in the contralateral motor cortex only in injured rats treated with GH.
Immunostaining of cells plated for 24 h revealed that > 99% were positive for the stem cell microfilament protein nestin (not shown), and that nearly all cells expressed the low affinity nerve growth factor receptor p75 (Fig.
Cytokeratin 19 (CK19, BA2266) and nestin (BA1289) antibodies were from Boster Biological (Wuhan, China).
(10) This approach may be further refined using the novel markers nestin and inositol phosphate 4-phosphatase.
Secondary antibodies were as follows: Alexa Fluor 488 for BrdU label and Alexa Fluor 594 for nestin label (Invitrogen[TM], Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., 1:1000).
Using confocal microscopy and RT-PCR they demonstrated the rare co-localization of nestin and insulin, both in freshly isolated islets and in long-term cultures enriched with nestin-positive cells obtained from cadaveric donors.
The tumours were variably positive for nestin (78.8%; 26/33) and GFAP (63.6%; 21/33), three tumours had CD34+ cells, but all were negative for CD117, alpha-smooth muscle actin and desmin.
Microvessel proliferation by co-expression ofendothelial nestin and Ki-67 is associated with a basal-likephenotype and aggressive features in breast cancer.
