The shifting of the peaks to longer wavelength can be explained by the fact that, on deprotonation, formation of naphtholate ion takes place, which can stabilize the [[pi].sup.*] excited state due to charge delocalization, bring the lowest excited closer to the highest ground state, and thus permit a lower energy (longer wavelength) for transition.
