moderately repetitive DNA

moderately repetitive DNA

sequences of DNA repeated throughout the eukaryotic GENOME and interspersed with other sequences; see, for example, the ALU SEQUENCE. Numbers of such a sequence vary from about 10 to 3000 per genome, and the length may be a few hundred to a few thousand BASE PAIRS. Functions of such sequences are largely unknown. Compare HIGHLY REPETITIVE DNA.
