modeccin

modeccin

A toxic protein, molecular weight 57 kD, produced by the wild granadilla plant (Adenia digitata), native to southeastern Africa. Like ricin, it kills mammalian cells by inactivating their ribosomes, preventing them from manufacturing proteins. Modeccin is most powerfully concentrated in the tubers of the wild granadilla.
