UCP3(redirected from mitochondrial uncoupling protein 3)
UCP3A gene on chromosome 11q13.4 that encodes one of the mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCP), which belong to the family of mitochondrial anion carrier proteins (MACPs). UCPs separate oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis (the so-called mitochondrial proton leak); facilitate the transfer of anions from the inner to the outer mitochondrial membrane, and protons from the outer to the inner mitochondrial membrane; and reduce the mitochondrial membrane potential in mammalian cells. UCP3 is expressed primarily in skeletal muscle, and thought to protect mitochondria against lipid-induced oxidative stress.
