An absorbent material suitably shaped and prepared to provide a hygienic means of absorbing menstrual fluid in the vagina. A cord is attached and remains outside the vagina to facilitate removal. These tampons are made for self-insertion. Washing hands before insertion and after removal as well as changing tampons often guards against toxic shock syndrome.See: menstruation; sanitary napkin
