bungee of death

A term coined by researchers at the Imperial College London for an elongated nanotubule that NK (natural killer, the body’s first line of defence) cells use to destroy would-be escaping cancer cells or cells infected with bacteria or viruses. The bungee tubule either drags the wayward cell back within reach so the NK cell can attach to it and form a so-called immune synapse, through which the NK cell passes toxic molecules to destroy the cytomiscreant, or else injects the toxins into escapees via the nanotubule.
