MC1R

A gene on chromosome 16q24.3 that encodes a receptor for alpha, beta and gamma melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH), the activity of which is mediated by G protein-activated adenylate cyclase.

Molecular pathology
Genetic variations in MC1R are associated with variation in skin/hair/eye pigmentation type 2, and are linked to cutaneous malignant melanoma type 5.
