medically-unexplained symptoms

medically-unexplained symptoms

Symptoms for which investigation, even if extensive, fails to reveal an organic cause. This substantial class of complaints, which is a frequent cause of patient dissatisfaction and is one of the most common reasons for attendance at general medical outpatient clinics, has been seriously neglected in the training of doctors. Routine prescription of analgesics or other drugs is of negative value, and these complains call for acknowledgement, counselling, reassurance and appropriate follow-up.
