meadowsweetHerbal medicine A perennial herb that contains flavonoids, salicylates (gaultherine and salicin), tannin, vitamin C and volatile oil; it is anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and diuretic, and has been used for diarrhoea, fever and rheumatic pain.
Any of three perennial herbs, Filipendula ulmaria, Spiraea alba, or S. latifolia, that grow in moist biomes. Meadowsweet is a source of aspirin-like chemicals used to treat chronic pain and is promoted as a digestive aid.
