A measure of the maximum secretory capacity of gastric hydrogen ions, which is defined as the sum of four 15-minute acid outputs.
 
Normal
5–60 mmol of titratable acid/hour after either pentagastrin or histamine stimulation. MAO is markedly increased in Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and in increased gastrin production.
