A very senior nurse in the UK who provides onsite leadership to a service or hospital, serves as nursing supervisor in the UK, and is concerned with improving the patient experience. The traditional matron was the senior-most nurse in a particular hospital and was responsible for the entire nursing and domestic staff. She (never he) oversaw all patient care and efficient running of the hospital. They were abolished in late 1960s with the reshuffling of the NHS triggered by the Salmon report.
