We have derived matching upper and lower bounds, up to a constant factor, for the average-case and worst-case number of I/Os needed to perform sorting-related tasks, which include sorting, FFT, permutation networks, permutting and matrix transposition. Under mild restrictions on the types of I/O possible, the constant factors implicit in our upper and lower bounds are often equal.
