mass tort litigation

A class of civil actions in which multiple plaintiffs are injured in a similar fashion by a defective product, hazardous substance or disaster. Mass tort litigation is often in the form of class-action lawsuit initiated by a large group of plaintiffs who claim to have suffered injury from a commercial product (e.g., asbestos and breast implants).
