maricultureCultivation of marine plants and animals for food or other purposes in open sea. Mariculture might satisfy the demand for fish (e.g., red drum, red snapper, mahimahi and stripped bass), which is projected to outstrip the supply in the near future; in one proposed system, an offshore concrete platform would serve the same purpose as ponds in aquaculture.
