The purpose of this article is to provide a brief overview of evidence-based practice and the methods used to determine best practices for inserting male catheters. This project underscores the need for nurses and other clinicians to examine carefully the evidence supporting practice to ensure that it is based on science rather than tradition and anecdotal report.
Improper insertion of male catheters in these and other patient populations not only results in patient trauma and associated injury, but adds days to the hospitalization, increases interventions and treatments to correct the variance, and increases the complexity of follow-up visits post-hospitalization.
