A small monocular or binocular magnifying lens, usually set in an eyepiece or head frame, used for examination or operation when fine detail is involved. Operating loupes have now largely been replaced by operating microscopes.

magnifier

An optical device, commonly used for close viewing, which produces an apparent magnification. It can be monocular or binocular, held in the hand (hand magnifier) or mounted in front of the eye (stand magnifier). It rarely exceeds a magnification of ✕10 and does not produce an inversion of the image (Fig. M5). Syn. loupe. See distance of distinct vision; magnifying lens; apparent magnification; low vision.
