lipoprotein lipase (LPL)

capillary endothelial enzyme that acts on lipoprotein particles (chylomicrons and VLDL) as they pass through capillaries in muscle, heart and adipose tissue, and hydrolyses their triacylglycerol to monoglyceride and fatty acids, which then move into cells. See also lipogenesis.
