bulb

a short, specialized underground stem in which nutrients (particularly sugars) are stored in fleshy scale leaves overlapping the stem. One or more buds are present in the AXILS of the scale leaves and in the spring these develop into new shoots, utilizing the stored food material. Examples of plants producing bulbs are onion, tulip and hyacinth.
