2. any one of a variety of small arteries entering the base of the brain through the anterior perforated substance and supplying the striatum, globus pallidus, and internal capsule; most of these perforating arteries are branches of the M1 segment (clinical terminology) of the middle cerebral and (rarely) of the anterior choroidal artery. (1) Any of the anterolateral central arteries of the sphenoidal part of middle cerebral artery—i.e., lenticulostriate artery—which was regarded as having an increased risk of rupture. 
(2) Anterolateral central arteries of the sphenoidal part of the middle cerebral artery; arteriae centrales anterolaterales; partis sphenoidalis arteriae cerebri mediae [NA6]; anterolateral thalamostriate arteries.
