any member of the pea family (Leguminosae). These plants have fruits which are pods containing one or more seeds. Examples are pea, bean, lupin, laburnum, gorse. Most legumes have root nodules and so can grow in soils deficient in nitrogen (see NITROGEN FIXATION). The root nodules are formed by symbiotic association with bacteria, typically Rhizobium species.
